Essential tram maintenance work between April 8th - 18th

Accessibility
Tram track renewal works are scheduled to take place next month from 8th to 18th of April

The works will take place on Wellesley Road, between Station Road and George Street, from 00.01am on 8th April to 5.00am on 18 April 2017 and will require a closure to traffic on George Street*, Station Road and southbound on Wellesley Road, and the planned closure of tram services between Reeves Corner and East Croydon.

Renewing the infrastructure at this location is aimed at providing a reliable, smoother service to tram customers and will reduce the need for large scale maintenance of the track for years to come.  To make optimum use of the closure, Thames Water and Southern Gas Networks (SGN) will also undertake utilities works on Wellesley Road during the same period.

Work will be carried out 24 hours a day to complete the works as soon as possible, however the intention is to carry out the noisiest activities during the day whenever possible.

Road closures and alternative routes

Southbound road traffic will be diverted via the A213 and A236 whilst southbound buses will run along Lansdowne Road and Dingwall Road. Sydenham Road will be made two-way to facilitate deliveries during the closure and local traffic will still have access via Bedford Park and Dingwall Road.

Tram closure and travel advice

During the works trams from Wimbledon will terminate at Reeves Corner. Trams from Beckenham Junction, New Addington and Elmers End will terminate at East Croydon. No trams will run from Elmers End after 7.30pm on week days, 6.30pm on Saturdays and all day Sundays. Customers from Elmers End can use nearby Birkbeck or Arena tram stops at these times.

As the distance between Reeves Corner and East Croydon tram stops is relatively short (approximately 12 minutes walk), bus replacement services will not operate during this closure. Staff will be available at the affected Tram stops to provide customers with assistance.

TfL is working closely with its works contractor and Croydon Council to minimise the impact of these works on the travelling public and local residents. For futher details visit the TfL website.

*George Street will close only between 8 and 12 April.
